Team GB Olympic and Paralympic Athletes told their London 2012 stories at Loughborough University Stadium on Wednesday April 24th, as part of the Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport Olympic and Paralympic Roadshow.
Five London 2012 athletes, from the sports of Athletics, Hockey and Basketball, gave their inspiring accounts of the events from last summer. An invited audience heard how each of the athletes became interested and engaged in their specific sport and what journey they took to arrive at London 2012. In attendance were:
- Richard Whitehead – Paralympic 200m Gold Medallist
- Drew Sullivan – Team GB Basketball Captain and current Leicester Riders Player
- Sam Ruddock – Paralympic Sprinter and LRS Board Member
- Nicola White – Olympic Hockey Bronze Medallist and Leicester Ladies Hockey Player
- Kate Denison – Olympic Pole Vaulter and former British record holder
All of the athletes that took part have strong links to the area either through their current club or their training being based at Loughborough University. The event took place at the Loughborough University Stadium, a facility that played a significant role in the Team GB preparation programme, as the stadium was the venue for the Media that attended the Team GB kitting out process at the University.
The evening was compared by Ian Stringer from BBC Radio Leicester and Gaynor Nash, East Midlands Coordinator for Children and Young Peoples Legacy from the 2012 Games, and culminated in a Q&A session.
Sound bites from the evening will be played on BBC Radio Leicester.
The evening is part of a series of Olympic and Paralympic athlete visits to schools, clubs and community settings throughout Leicester and Leicestershire as we strive to capitalise on the increased interest in sport generated by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
So far 48 visits by 14 different Olympic and Paralympic Athletes have taken place engaging over 8,500 young people and a further 1,800+ members of local sporting community groups.
The programme of visits has been coordinated by Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport (LRS) and supported by the Inspire LeicesterShire 2012 Legacy Team.
